St Joseph's

544 Balcolmbe Road,Black Rock. Vic 3193

Welcome to the website of Nazareth Parish, Ricketts Point. Nestled in Melbourne’s beautiful Bayside our parish incorporates the former parishes of Stella Maris, Beaumaris and St Joseph’s, Black Rock. While the individual parishes have been merged the patrons of our two churches remain.

Stella Maris Church is named after the mother of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary and particularly, her title of Stella Maris, which is the Latin for “Star of the Sea.” In the Litany of Loreto from which this title originates, Our Lady is invoked under numerous titles. For us Christians Mary is like the star that shines over Port Phillip Bay and guides sailors into port. St Joseph’s Church has as it patron the foster father of Jesus. St Joseph is the one entrusted by God to take care of both His Mother and His Son. In this way Nazareth Parish is also the parish dedicated to the Holy Family.

The life of every Catholic parish must be rooted in the Lord Jesus, who gave himself up for her on the cross for love of his bride, the Church (cf. Eph 5:25). The words of the psalmist remain perennially true: “Unless the Lord builds the house the labourers labour in vain” (Psalm 127:1). We, the people of Nazareth Parish, stand under the cross of Our Lord depicted beautifully in our icon-crucifix in Stella Maris Church. “Standing under the cross” (cf. Jn 19:25) with Mary we are formed as the Church, awaiting for the glorious return of the Lord. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, commenting on Psalm 127, reminded us that we can do nothing without God, but with him all things are possible. With the Lord, “there is prosperity and fruitfulness, a peaceful family richly endowed with children, a well-fortified and protected city, free of constant worry and insecurity.”

Guided by our patrons we gather to worship our loving God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Through the sacraments and especially the Holy Eucharist, may he build us into that place where he dwells, his holy Church in Ricketts Point.

Kind regards
